Friday Favorites – Our Hensley Hitch

Friday Favorites – Our Hensley Hitch

This week’s Friday Favorite is our Hensley Hitch. We’ve had a number of questions about our hitch so today we thought we would answer some of them and explain why we like our Hensley so much. We agree it can be overkill but we’d rather spend money on the safety of our home than anywhere else! With the Hensley Steve never worries about the Airstream staying behind us, steady on the road.

Do you have experience with the Hensley? Do you have a favorite hitch?

Interesting to see you stab the stinger into the receiver. With our ProPride the alignment has to be absolutely straight in. A love hate relationship really, but the towing part is pure heaven. On the hate side, there have been several irritating moments on both connect and disconnect, but after a year I think we have it pretty much down.

We’re getting better with the connecting and disconnecting has never been an issue. We learned recently that we don’t have to get the stinger 100% seated. As long as we can then latch the over the center latches it will pull itself together. That was a game changer for us.

I have the Blue Ox, but I wish the salesman had sold me a Hensley or ProPride. I’ve only towed twice and not in heavy winds, but no sway doing 60-65 and no sway when passed by a semi.

Blue Ox seems to be the one pushed nowadays. If it works that’s perfect!

How do you determine which stinger to use on your Hensley. I “inherited” a Hensley with the purchase of my Airstream. It came with a 2″ and a 4″ stinger bar.

As I undersand it, we are attempting to level the trailer and the truck with the proper stinger rather than using the spring bars to do so????

When I hitch up the Hensley, I use two of the magnetic “Hitchin’ Sticks”. One of the sticks has a rubber o-ring on it that I use to match the height of the receiver to the height of the stinger. I put one stick on the Hensley receiver and one on the END of the stinger. This allows me to very easily see if there is any angular difference between stinger and receiver.

BTW, we love your videos and eagerly await every new installment!

That is an awesome idea! We’re going to have to look for those “hitchin sticks”. Thanks so much!
