This week we are answering questions from a few viewers dealing with dogs and RVing.
We have a whole playlist with all our dog chat videos here.
We answer a bunch of related questions today including:
Are dogs worth the hassle when RVing?
For us, yes. We had our dogs before we started RVing and were not going to get rid of them when we started since they are part of our family. That being said if we didn’t already have dogs we probably wouldn’t have gotten one. There are limitations with having dogs when RVing including not being able to be away from the RV for as long and having to worry a lot more about temperature. There are also positives such as protection and obviously companionship. It all depends on you.
Pet etiquette?
Even if your dog is friendly think before letting them roam off-leash. It’s often against the rules in campgrounds and although your dog may be friendly that dog they approach may not be. You will be at fault if something happens. On walks, our dog Penny is on a leash and perfectly fine but if a dog gets in her face (even if being friendly) she will attack it. If you do have your dogs off leash train them to NOT approach other dogs.
Don’t let your dogs bark all day long. Have noise inside the RV to help distract them from what’s going on outside. It’s the neighborly thing to do.
Always pick up after your dog. That should be enough said 🙂
Special considerations for pets when leaving them in the RV?
Temperature! Either be sure your rig will stay safe or don’t leave your pets when the temperatures get into dangerous territories. Have an emergency sign on your rig telling responders how many pets are inside and listing an emergency contact number just in case. Make sure to leave them with plenty of water if you are going to be gone for a while.
What about vets on the road?
We use Petsmart when we can. The Banfield Vet Clinic is in most Petsmarts and since they already have the dog’s records it makes it easier. That being said you are not always going to be near a Petsmart so make sure to know where emergency vets in the area are as well. Also, its good to have copies of your pet’s records in paper form just in case.
