This week we are answering a question from a viewer. They asked besides working hard and investing what else did we do to set our selves up to live this amazing life of freedom we are enjoying.
Fair warning…this question has us thinking deep. The main thing we agree that we did to facilitate gaining financial freedom, retiring early and living a life of travel in our Airstream is not only being okay with change…but actually seeking it out.
Change is hard. There is a reason why it’s called our comfort zone. It can be a lot easier and less scary to stay doing what we are used to. But if we do that we miss out on so much!
While Steve actively seeks out change because he gets bored with the same old routine no matter how good it is. Courtney enjoys her comfort zone but knows that life is better when you step outside of it.
What are some examples of the ways we’ve embraced change in our lives? Courtney has changed her diet more times than you can count in order to try and improve her health and get rid of her migraines (instead of just taking the meds proscribed and living with it). Steve would change jobs every couple of years because he knew a new job would challenge him and he’d make more money. We both decided to sell everything we own and move into an Airstream (even living in it full-time over an AZ summer when we could have stayed in the house for another 6 months instead).
All of these were hard but in the end, turned out to be rewarding and sometimes life-changing decisions. So our advice to you is: go for it. The timing is never going to be perfect. Step out of your comfort zone and keep stepping until you get where you want to be (just remember not to stay there for too long because comfort zones have a way of shifting!).
