This week we are answering a question from a viewer about our scariest moments full-time RVing in our Airstream over the past 3+ years.
We think they may have been asking about feeling scared places but for us when we think of our scariest moments it has to do with malfunctions of our truck! Our first year on the road we had a couple of big problems occur.
First, we had our rear driver side tire on our truck blowout while towing the Airstream on the highway going 70mph. It sounded like a gunshot and scared us both but especially Steve who had to get across a couple of lanes safely with all of us and our home in tow. Wow! That ended up being an experience since the blowout took out the fuel line and cracked out diesel tank as well. Now we don’t mess around with tire safety. If there is even a chance we need to replace the tires we will.
Another scary moment was when we finally figured out the hitch problem that had been plaguing us for a while. The hitch was making all sorts of weird scary noises. We did everything we could but the Hensley seemed in perfect working order (and it was). It turns out it was the hitch receiver on the truck that was the issue. By the time we figured it out it was only being held on by 2 of the original 4 bolts. We still decided to move the Airstream on the windy Pacific Coast highway and up an incredibly steep embankment before getting a new much more secure hitch receiver. Not the right mood and incredibly scary! Don’t do this!
As for places that scared us…it hasn’t happened. Obviously, some places are better than others and we did have that one time someone was shooting too close on BLM land and we could hear bullets zinging by but otherwise, we have always felt safe when camping. If we didn’t we’d pack up and leave! That’s the beauty of having a movable home.
